Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.) in Industrial Engineering

I am a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.) in Industrial Engineering from Polytechnique Montréal (Canada).

My doctoral research was grounded in the principles of Technological Innovation & Strategy and System Analysis—core disciplines that directly address the exponential growth of IT complexity in modern enterprises.

My value proposition is simple: I translate complexity into clarity.

I leverage this advanced expertise to:

  1. Deconstruct IT Complexity: Systematically analyze and model the inherent complexity of your information systems and digital infrastructure to identify inefficiencies (such as a lack of standards) and structural risks.
  2. Engineer Strategic Roadmaps: Develop integrated, evidence-based technological strategies that align your IT ecosystem (like M&A projects) directly with core organizational objectives, ensuring sustainable competitive advantage and operational excellence.
  3. Drive Transformational Change: Move beyond incremental fixes to implement innovative systems that streamline production, enhance organization, and solidify a foundation for continuous innovation.

My background is the foundation for building resilient, high-performing organizations where technology is a strategic asset! Not a source of friction 😉

Phd Outcomes:

  1. Innovation Ecosystem Model Canvas (patented)
  2. Over 300 hours of technology strategy assessment and development workshops with Canada’s leading technology startups. Strategies were delivered based on ecosystems, delivering value across a network, rather than relying on a single business model.
  3. Presentation at an International Conference: Building Bridges” – The 16th biannual conference in Montreal from July 6th to July 8th, 2016, has been the third conference of the International Joseph A. Schumpeter Society taking place in North America. And with 293 speakers and delegates from 34 countries, it was so far the largest event in North America with the highest international outreach. The opportunity to present at this forum was made even more significant by the caliber of the participants. The conference featured keynotes and plenaries from scholars whose contributions define modern economic thought. I was honored to be part of an event that hosted figures like:

Richard Nelson – Pioneer of Evolutionary Economics and the National Innovation Systems framework.
Joel Mokyr – Distinguished economic historian focused on the origins of the modern economy and the central role of technological change.
Mariana Mazzucato – Leading scholar on innovation policy, known for her work on the Entrepreneurial State and market-creating missions.
Giovanni Dosi – Highly influential evolutionary economist whose work covers technological change, industrial dynamics, and microfoundations of macroeconomics.
Franco Malerba – Prominent figure in Innovation Systems, specifically known for the concept of Sectoral Systems of Innovation.
Gunnar Eliasson – Known for his work on micro-macro links in economic growth, the MOSES model, and empirical evolutionary analysis.
Pierre Mohnen – A leading scholar in the measurement and evaluation of R&D and innovation policy effectiveness.
  4. My Article Selected as the Top Published Paper from the ISS Special Edition! I am reflecting on a career-defining professional milestone achieved after the International Joseph A. Schumpeter Society (ISS) Conference in Montreal (2016). My research article was selected as the top published paper from the hundreds of submissions that made it into the subsequent journal special edition! Scientific Impact of my research:

…Nihad Bassis constructs this bridge with his contribution Systems of Innovation and Innovation Ecosystems: … highlighting the commonalities and common roots of these two strong fields. He furthermore sees the complementarities between both approaches offering potentials for cross-fertilization in this important area addressing the emergence and functioning of new industrial domains. – Jorge Niosi & Andreas Pyka

Project Manager Certified PRINCE2 Practitioner – PRINCE2 (Projects IN Controlled Environments) is a highly structured, process-based methodology that provides an essential governance framework for delivering projects that remain viable and aligned with business goals.

The Practitioner level signifies not just theoretical knowledge, but the proven ability to adapt and tailor this scalable framework to the unique demands of complex IT projects and strategic transformation initiatives.

I leverage my PRINCE2 Practitioner certification to:

  • Ensure Continued Business Justification: Mandate that every stage of a project (especially IT/digital transformation) maintains a clear, agreed-upon business case.
  • Manage by Stages and Exception: Implement a rigorous, stage-by-stage control mechanism that provides senior management with the necessary oversight without micromanagement, a crucial factor in managing large-scale IT complexity.
  • Translate Strategy to Delivery: Provide the structured blueprint needed to operationalize the high-level strategies derived from my Industrial Engineering background, guaranteeing predictable delivery within controlled cost, time, and quality parameters.

This combination of Ph.D. rigor and Practitioner-level governance ensures that strategic plans are not only analytically sound but also flawlessly executed.

SAP – Enterprise Architect – Building upon a foundation of strategic foresight (Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering) and rigorous project governance (PRINCE2 Practitioner), my expertise extends into the critical domain of Enterprise Architecture, with a specific focus on SAP landscapes.

As an SAP Enterprise Architect with Advisory Skills (certified since 2022), I possess the specialized capability to:

  1. Translate Business Vision into Technical Blueprint: Bridge the Gap between Strategic Organizational Goals and the Underlying IT Architecture. I design integrated, scalable, and resilient IT solutions that directly support and enable your most ambitious business transformations.
  2. Optimize Complex IT Landscapes: Leverage a deep understanding of the vast IT ecosystem to rationalize existing IT investments, eliminate redundancies, and ensure maximum value realization from your IT environment.
  3. Drive Strategic IT Roadmapping: Develop clear, phased architectural roadmaps that guide your organization through complex digital transitions, ensuring alignment between technology choices, operational processes, and future growth objectives.
  4. Provide Expert Advisory: Offer senior-level guidance on critical architectural decisions, technology selections, and governance frameworks, helping organizations navigate the complexities of digital transformation with confidence.

My role is to ensure that your enterprise technology is not merely functional but becomes a powerful strategic asset—flexible enough to adapt to market/tech changes, robust enough to support mission-critical operations, and optimized to drive innovation and efficiency across the entire organization.

These credentials underscore my ability to design the precise architectural components required to bring business capabilities and systems to life, ensuring seamless integration and long-term strategic advantage.
